Can school campuses track direct downloads if the file is broken up into .rar files?
i know they can track p2p but what about direct downloads?i'm on campus and i am downloading an iso from megaupload. the file is broken up into about a hundred pieces. i was wondering if there is anyway i could get in trouble for this. i know it probably goes through the school's router but is there anyway that they can distinguish the files as illegal because they look like random links to megaupload. is there someone there that shifts through all these files? or do they have a search engine the finds particular files. thanks
Your school can monitor what you're downloading & can capture your downloaded files and inspect them, regardless of the file type. In reality, however, they probably don't have the time or the care to do this.
Where you should be concerned is who is on the other side of your download. i.e. who is monitoring the torrent or the file share on the internet. The music and movie industry has a practice of planting decoy files on file sharing sites and capturing the IP addresses of those who participate in illegal downloading/uploading. Keep in mind also that when you're using a p2p file sharing client, you're also probably sharing out what you're downloading, so that makes is extremely easy for monitoring of illegal filesharing from the internet.
If you're going to download copyrighted materials, don't do it from your own machine & turn off uploading from your client.
